Dr John Ryan (m)

Having joined the Alverton practice in 1989 Dr Ryan is now the senior partner. 

Dr Ryan's areas of special interest include minor surgery and diabetes for which he is the practice lead.  He also has a long standing and active interest in clinical research since and is a former member of the Local Ethics Committee. In recent years the Alverton practice and its patients have participated in many pivotal clinical research studies benefiting scientific advances within medicine.

Dr Ryan is actively involved in remote area medicine regularly providing medical support on maritime expeditions.  He is the Deputy Lifeboat Medical Advisor for the Penlee Lifeboat and is also a GP Appraiser and senior GP Trainer.

Dr Richard Cheyne (m)

Dr Cheyne attended medical school in Birmingham and then worked in hospital posts in both Torbay and North Devon.He moved to Cornwall in 1999 to complete his GP training at the Wadebridge and Camel Estuary practice.  In 2003 he moved to Penzance and joined the Alverton practice and became a Partner in 2004.

During his time with the practice, he has developed an interest in the treatment of drug and alcohol problems. Dr Cheyne has an active interest in teaching and is a trainer for GP Registrars in addition to helping support the medical students attached to the practice.

Dr Matthew Boulter (m)

Having initially trained in surgery, Dr Boulter moved to Cornwall to follow a career as a GP joining the Practice in 2009.  He became a Partner in 2012.  His background in orthopaedic surgery enables him to provide musculoskeletal expertise and advice for our patients. 

He is the practice lead for Minor Surgery and runs courses to help other GPs develop their minor surgical skills.

Dr Boulter has more than 25 years service as an Army Reservist and has deployed all over the world in this role including an operational tour of Afghanistan. He has an active interest in the healthcare of our military veterans.

His other medical interests include pre-hospital care and remote area medicine. He often provides medical advice to the Cornish Pirates and he is the Medical Adviser for the Penlee Lifeboat.  He is also a approved doctor for the Martime and Coastguard Agency and thus is able to perform specialist medical examinations for both.  

Dr Boulter also works for the NHS Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group and was instrumental in the development of the Urgent Care Centre at West Cornwall Hospital and the Musculoskeletal Interface Service.  He is the Chief Clinical Information Officer for the CCG and has also pioneered project supporting children and young people with psychological and behavioural issues.

Dr Sandra Treleven (f)

Dr Treleven qualified from St George's Hospital Medical School in 1996.  She undertook further postgraduate training in Basingstoke and qualified as a GP in 2002.  She continued to work as a GP in Basingstoke until 2008 and then moved to Cornwall & has been working at the Alverton practice ever since.

Her special interests are women's health, including contraception & menopause.  Dr Treleven is also actively involved in medical education and is an academic tutor & examiner at the Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry.  She supervises the medical students attached to the practice and also co-organises training workshops for GPs involved in medical student education.

Dr Andrew Boorne (m)

Associate Doctor

BSc MB BS (London 1997) DRCOG DTM&H MRCGP (Exam)

Dr Boorne trained at St Mary’s/Imperial College London and later spent time at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine studying for his Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H). He then worked extensively in some of the poorer parts of the world.  For two years he was the senior doctor running in a rural hospital in Papua New Guinea. He joined the Alverton practice in February 2009 and for obvious reasons is the practice lead for travel and tropical medicine.

He is also one of the local GPs who also work for the Acute GP Service based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.  This service helps GPs access the investigations, tests and some of the expertise of the hospital, quickly and ideally without all the inconvenience to the patient.  In many cases this can avoid an unnecessary hospital admission.

Dr Boorne is also involved with the Peninsular Medical School, and has a role with the ‘Health for the Homeless’ service.  He is a committed Christian and is a family man with 2 sons.
